| It is said that Nobeoka’s oldest temple was built in 717, the legend of Jofuku’s Horai remains, and at the top there is the tallest (17m) statue of Kobo Daishi in Japan. The Daishi Festival, said to be one of the three major spring festivals in Kyushu, is held in April, and Toka Ebisu is held in February. |

| This modern castle was built by Motane Takahashi, the first lord of the Nobeoka domain, and is the setting for the Tenkaichi Takigi Noh performance in early October against the backdrop of the 22m-high stone wall that killed thousands of people. | Ayu-yana, a traditional fishing method that has been used for over 300 years, is strung across the Gokase River from October to early December. | At an altitude of 831m, it consists of Mt. Odake and Mt. Medake, and the 77m waterfall that falls between the two peaks has been selected as one of Japan’s top 100 waterfalls. Other attractions include Mt. Hiei, a famous place for rock climbing, and Mt. Okure, which has an altitude of 1,644m. |
